About the Neuter Clinic

The Neuter Clinic was founded over 20 years ago with the goal of combining veterinary education with animal welfare. Since 2025, Neuter Clinic Spain has been run by Drs. Esther Pieters, a dedicated veterinarian with a strong passion for both animal welfare and veterinary education.

From a young age, Esther was surrounded by animals and quickly knew she wanted to become a veterinarian. In 2009, she graduated with high honours from the University of Ghent (Belgium).

After graduating, she spent six months volunteering at an animal hospital in India. This experience had a lasting impact, exposing her to both the challenges of veterinary medicine and the urgent need to help animals in difficult conditions. It strengthened her commitment to working with animals in need.

Back in the Netherlands, Esther combined her work in practice with regular trips to Spain, where she worked with shelters and rescue organisations. Together with fellow veterinarians, she performed spay and neuter surgeries to help reduce the stray animal population and improve animal welfare.

When the opportunity arose to take over Neuter Clinic Spain, it felt like a natural next step. In May 2025, she moved to Spain with her animals — many of them adopted from shelters. Today, she continues the clinic’s mission of combining hands-on surgical training for veterinary students with support for shelters and refugios.

A unique learning environment

Students and young veterinarians can gain hands-on experience in spay and neuter surgery in a supportive, relaxed environment. Unlike in busy commercial practices, the focus here is entirely on learning.

All procedures are supervised by an experienced veterinarian who guide students throughout the process.Students perform all parts of the procedure, including:

  • anaesthesia

  • intubation

  • surgical preparation

  • the surgery itself

Helping animals in need

At the same time, The Neuter Clinic provides free sterilisation surgeries for stray and shelter animals.

By working together with local shelters, refugios and animal rescue organisations, we help reduce the stray population and increase the chances of adoption for many animals.

Continuing the mission

Since 2025, The Neuter Clinic has been run by Drs. Esther Pieters, who continues the mission of combining veterinary education with helping animals in need.
